What does it mean ... ?

... when the place that does your ultrasound won't allow you to collect the report and insists on forwarding it directly to the Obstetrician?

Today was U-day, the day where my 20 week ultrasound issues were meant to be checked and reported on. It has been one of the longest days in my life and I find myself too emotionally and physically exhausted to even insist that my 5 year old get his tail back to bed rather than playing in the light of the kitchen just one room away.

We spent over 45 minutes with a doppler to my belly. The initial time was over half an hour and seemed pretty routine. She measured the kidneys and from our research the measurements mapped to our dates looked within the realms of normal. The sonographer did spend some time looking at the heart, yet, only recorded one of the five views that they normally take in the 20-week scan. It was the 4-chambers view.

All in all, it all seemed well. She wiped off my belly and said it was my R&R time whilst she ran the images past the Doctor. Less than 5 minutes later she was back and said she just needed a few more shots and to see if baby had actually emptied its bladder. Initially, she went for the abdominal cavity and took just one more dating measurement, and even at the end of it baby had not emptied it's bladder. That aside, she then spent over 10 minutes looking at the heart, the heartbeat, the blood flow and recording some sort of measurements that the ultrasound device can make.

She then proceeded to print these off to show the Doctor also. When she returned we were fine to pay and head off but not with our report which would be sent to our Obstetrician. Hmm, so much for preparing ourselves for the next appointment which is what seems to be *ages* away (on just this Friday).

So, my hope now is that it was that the Doctors who report on the films were simply snowed under and wanted to post-pone some reports so they could keep up with the ones that needed urgent responses. I dread to consider what else this part of my day could mean.
