Life

A birthday poem for a 9th birthday.

As many would be aware, I am currently working part-time for NannySA under contract to FamiliesSA. This means that I spend time caring for children who are under the guardianship of the Minister who are not in foster homes.

One of the children I care for had her 9th birthday this last week and this is the poem I wrote for her as a gift:

To celebrate your life is great, you know?
When it seems that birthdays just come and go
Remember it's to stop and celebrate every day this last year, and
That you make the world a better place today and tomorrow.

Hope - a character description

This year I have studied my Certificate III in Education Support. Part of this included 100 hours of in-class support at a local Christian school. During this time I had the great privilege of taking small groups of Year 4 students to develop character descriptions. One of the students asked if I was writing one. I had not intended to but at her suggestion I said that I would. So this is it:

Hope

She climbed up excitedly on the couch and leaned on the back to look out the window. Just outside she saw his knobly knee caps and the light wiry brown hairs that seemed to spring out from his legs. As he stood there on the ladder, she had to squint her big blue eyes in order to look up and try to see his face. She soon stopped as she realised that she could only see up to his chest as he stood up there clearing out the gutters.
