Ultrasound issues

By Kristy A. Bennett - Posted on 30 September 2009

So, in my web site disclaimer I say that content on my web site, "is my chance to throw any event going on in my life against a wall like shattered eggs, to watch them slide down, make a mess and laugh at so that I can then sleep at night." This is one of those posts.

Some time ago, someone on a forum I participated in provided a link to a particularly insensitive YouTube clip - a song about how they think pregnant women are smug. Early in the clip are the lyrics:

So, do you want a boy or a girl?
Oh, it doesn't matter as long as it is healthy.
Really, because I don't think it's like those two things are related. It's not like it's one or the other.
No, really as long as it's healthy.
I can't wait to hear someone say, 'Don't care if it's brain dead, don't care if it's a limbless or if it has a penis.' Pregnant women are smug, everyone knows it, nobody says it because their pregnant.

What these two 'artists' simply lack the understanding of is that matters of gender completely pale in comparison to medical issues that can be raised for these little lives. It makes the simple raising of the question about gender preference totally trivial.

Monday we had Baby Bennett IV's morphology scan. All seemed well with a very active baby playing chase with the sonographer and we even got a gender insight which was nice. However, it was overshadowed by the medical report that came with the films. The crap side is that it is a big case of 'wait and see' for now.

They found 'prominent renal pelvis' meaning that part of both the kidneys are larger than it should be. This could be something minor that will self-rectify or require minor treatment such as blocked urethra, black-flush from the bladder. It could also be a sign of increased risk of Downs Syndrome. This makes up just over 90% of the chances. The minor chance is that it is the more serious multi-polycystic kidney disease which in neonates is fatal without kidney transplant.

Of course, it doesn't help to spend too much time thinking about these rare possibilities until after more definitive ultrasound results which cannot be done until much later in pregnancy. So there it is, my shattered eggs for today...

..now to get focussed back on the things I need to do.

This has been added to my list of 'uncontrollables'.

Found your blog via EB :)

Just wanted to say our 2 DD had the same "prominent renal pelvis" issue which was shown at an ultrasound.

She has just celebrated her 2nd birthday and has had no ill effects of this. She has 6mnthly ultrasounds and is as fit as a fiddle :) She has never been sick, nor needed the operation despite hers not correcting itself yet still.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Hard not to worry with that news, as I was exactly the same when we found out

Thank you for your thoughts and your story which was very heartening. No doubt we will have more news around the 22nd of January when we follow-up with another ultrasound and follow-up appointments.
